Surfactants

Surfactants are the most versatile products of the chemical industry. They are utilized in every industrial area ranging from household detergents to drilling muds and food items to pharmaceuticals.

The term surfactant comes from the word surface active agent. They are amphiphilic molecules and are thus absorbed in the air-water interface. At the interface, they align themselves so that the hydrophobic part is in the air and the hydrophilic part is in water. This will cause a decrease in surface or interfacial tensions.

There are four groups of surfactants:

Anionic surfactants are negatively charged. In terms of quantity, they represent the most important group of surfactants. They foam strongly, have the highest washing power and are therefore primarily used for detergents. They can also be found in cleaning and dishwashing detergents as well as in skin cleaning and care products/shampoos.

Cationic surfactants are positively charged. They clean less, but make laundry soft, hair easy to comb and have an antistatic effect. They are part of fabric softeners and hair conditioners. Certain types have a biocidal effect and are therefore used in disinfectants.

Nonionic surfactants carry no charge. They are used as washing and cleaning agents and as emulsifiers. They can also be found in many skin cleansing and care products. They are less sensitive to hardness than anionic surfactants and develop their performance even at low washing temperatures.

Amphoteric surfactants are negatively and positively charged at the same time. They are added to other surfactants as co-surfactants and can be found in hand dishwashing detergents, shampoos and other cosmetic products.
